What Happened to Making African Fabrics with Natural Dyes?

When people think of locally made African textiles—textiles labeled as “traditional” or “handmade”—they often assume these are made entirely from organic, locally grown materials. This is not a far-fetched assumption, since some of the best-known African textiles are indeed made from 100% natural fibers and dyes. Bogolanfini cloth, for example, is made from locally cultivated and spun cotton; woven on a locally made narrow loom and dyed with mud and other plant dyes. Similarly, Ndop textiles are woven from cotton, resist-dyed with raffia, and dyed with locally cultivated indigo.

African Makers are Still Using Natural Fibers and Dyes: 

Although Bogolanfini, Ndop, and other locally woven and dyed cloths continue to be produced this way today, they represent just one category of African textiles. Other types of surface-patterned African textiles are produced and decorated with a mix of natural and synthetic materials. Adire is a Nigerian resist-dyed textile that features patterns created through tie-dye, stitching, cassava paste, or wax. Traditionally dyed with indigo, its dyeing methods have now expanded to include synthetic dyes. Other African textiles, such as bazin and, more recently, batik, are now dyed primarily with synthetic dyes.

African Makers Adapting to New Modes of Production: 

Most African batik makers today produce for commercial markets rather than for personal or ceremonial use alone, and that shift changes what the dye has to do. A customer buying a bolt of fabric for resale to patrons who intend to use it for ceremonial or daily wear expects the color to withstand repeated washing, sun exposure, and years of wear.  Makers use synthetic dyes that bond more predictably to fabric and hold their color longer, which matters when a maker’s reputation depends on a garment still looking sharp months after purchase.

There’s also the matter of scale and repeatability. Fashion designers and boutique owners who order fabric in bulk need every yard to look identical; natural dye baths can vary depending on the season, the age of the plant material, or even the water source, making exact replication difficult. Synthetic dyes are more standardized, so a maker can promise a client the same shade today that they delivered last month.

Finally, there’s the practical reality of time and cost.

Synthetic dyes are easier to source, mix, and apply, which allows makers to meet tighter production deadlines and keep up with commercial order volumes. For businesses operating on thin margins, that efficiency can be the difference between keeping a client and losing one to a competitor.

Taken together, these pressures on durability, variety, consistency, and speed explain why many contemporary African textile makers have adapted their materials even as the artistry and cultural significance of the designs remain unchanged.

In short, some African fabrics continue to be made with natural dyes, while other makers have opted for dyes that better serve their business and their customers' needs.
